On May 19, the Chinese Embassy in Trinidad and Tobago, in partnership with the Arthur Lok Jack Global School of Business at the University of the West Indies, hosted an academic symposium under the theme “China-Caribbean Cooperation Amid a Changing World.” Mr. Yang Han, Deputy Head of Mission and Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy, Ms. Kiva Clarke, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr. Chai Yu, Director-General of the Institute of Latin American Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and Dr. Xing Guangcheng, Member of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, attended and delivered remarks. The event brought together over 150 participants, including experts, scholars, and heads of diplomatic missions in Trinidad and Tobago.

In his remarks, Mr. Yang highlighted the third China’s Policy Paper on Latin America and the Caribbean and the “Five Programs” for China-LAC cooperation. He noted that despite existing challenges, cooperation between China and the Caribbean continues to offer broad opportunities. China is ready to work with regional countries to uphold equality and mutual respect, pursue win-win cooperation, safeguard true multilateralism, and jointly build a China-Caribbean community with a shared future.

During the symposium, scholars from both sides engaged in in-depth discussions on topics such as trade and investment, infrastructure, green development, environmental protection, and people-to-people exchanges between China and the Caribbean. All participants expressed willingness to further explore cooperation potential across various fields and contribute greater stability to regional and global peace and development.
