September 19, 2026 was marked as International Coastal Cleanup Day. Staff from the Chinese Embassy in Jamaica took part in volunteer coastal-cleaning activities at Port Royal in their personal time.

Led by Charge d’Affaires ad interim Yang Xiaorong and Counselor Wang Youli, the embassy delegation was joined by representatives from the Confucius Institute at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Chinese enterprises, and members of the local Chinese community. Working side-by-side, the Chinese volunteer group collected and sorted about 170 kilograms of waste. The event demonstrates China’s commitment to advancing Xi Jinping Thought on Ecological Civilization and lends support to Jamaica’s environmental protection endeavours.

International Coastal Cleanup Day stands as one of Jamaica’s flagship environmental volunteer programmes. It is co-organized by the Jamaica Environment Trust , the National Environment and Planning Agency and other partner organizations. This year saw over 130 groups register to participate, with more than 170 clean-ups to take place across Jamaica.
